If you want to prowl the northern waters of Wisconsin and Minnesota for an elusive big fighting fish, the muskellenge or muskie is what to set your hooks for. The name for this lunker comes from an Ojibwe word meaning “ugly fish”. A voracious eater, they can approach 60 inches and over 60 pounds. Is your net ready?
To catch them, means to cast, cast, and cast some more - with over-sized lures that seem to have been marinated in steroids. You may go several days with wary a bite. Like the fellows I followed in the scope over two weeks in the nearby bay, you keep the casters going until Yikes - the fish finds the low-cal lunch.
