Things happen.  More things happen when people don’t think.   And we have all seen the unwelcome.

Scene One:  While on our group’s canoe portage to fish on Siskewet Lake on Lake Superior’s Isle Royale, one of the dads threw his depth finder battery into his daughter’s backpack.  Then while carrying the canoe and following behind her, he saw her backpack smoke.  The Dad hollered to whip off the backpack which she quickly did. There was a metal fish stringer in the backpack that had shorted out the battery which in turn caused the fire in the backpack.  A careless decision turned a simple walk in the woods to a near disaster.

Scene Two:  Trying to set his trolling lines a little too fast, one fellow holds a treble hook spoon in his hand not knowing that the Dipsey Diver just fell into the water.  By design, the Dipsey pulls down hard on the line and sinks one of the lure’s hooks deep into the fisherman’s thumb.   Now it was ER time.

Scene Three:  Three eager fellows set out from the boat landing in their sixteen-foot fishing boat  hustling to get out onto the big waters of Lake Superior.  Distracted by their fishing discussion, they plow into the side of a channel marker in broad daylight.  The collision threw one fellow into the bay who luckily avoided avoided serious injury, but the fishing discussion was over and the trip ended.

Many accidents happen due to inebriation, but in these three scenes the cause was inattention and carelessness.  Staying sober is the essential first thing for staying safe.  But beyond that, simply paying attention to what is going on will reduce risk of injury.
